SpongeBob The Movie: Sponge On The Run
About the movie
SpongeBob SquarePants, his best friend Patrick Star and the rest of the gang from Bikini Bottom hit the big screen in the first-ever all CGI SpongeBob motion picture event. After SpongeBob’s beloved pet snail Gary is snail-napped, he and Patrick embark on an epic adventure to The Lost City of Atlantic City to bring Gary home. As they navigate the delights and dangers on this perilous and hilarious rescue mission, SpongeBob and his pals prove there’s nothing stronger than the power of friendship.

My Initial Thoughts
This is the first-ever all CGI SpongeBob motion picture event. When I had the boys watch the trailer and give me their thoughts, the first thing they noticed was the upgraded animation. They were actually impressed with it and think it will be an attractive feature for those who go to see the movie.
When it comes to the story, they were also intrigued. A story about true, genuine friendship always finds its way into the hearts of the audience. Add a little mystery and you groom even more curiosity.
In fact, while I am not a SpongeBob SquarePants fan in the least, I actually do appreciate the fact that this movie will take us on a journey that speaks to the importance of authentic friendships. I love what Patrick says in the trailer:
“Friends don’t let friends go on dangerous quests alone.”
Patrick has this unfailing devotion to his friends and SpongeBob has the same for his sweet Gary. It’s an endearing character trait to possess and is something to cherish if you have a friend like Patrick.
Of course, the fun cameo by Keanu Reeves will be an attractive draw, as well, as Keanu seems to be making quite the name for himself again these days. His interaction with SpongeBob and Patrick caught quite a few chuckles from our little crew at the advanced screening.
Will you be diving in to see this movie?
The movie is not yet rated, but the trailer doesn’t give much indication that it will be much beyond PG or PG-13. SpongeBob has his quirks and things that make some moms cringe, but I didn’t see much that would have turned me away at this point. He has his clan of fans, so the movie will definitely be popular. I mean, if you’ve been following these Nickelodeon characters for any length of time, this is likely going to be high on your list of animated features to see.
Who knows…miracles have been known to happen. Maybe I’ll actually find myself catching this one when it hits theaters. I did laugh at the trailer, you know.
SpongeBob will soak up the theater limelight May 22, 2020.
