We are days away from Spies in Disguise arriving in theaters. Right alongside of its opening, Denali Publishing will be releasing a mobile app, Spies in Disguise: Agents On The Run. We’re talking a dynamic running game that allows the player to perform top-secret spy missions as their favorite characters from the movie. Not only did I get the chance to play the game for a few minutes in California, but I was also given the awesome opportunity to access the game early for the purpose of providing a full review. To be honest ~ I’m having a hard time putting the game down!!

Let’s Get Weird With Spies In Disguise: Agents On The Run Mobile App!
Blue Sky Studios’ Spies in Disguise is an action adventure involving spies, science, friendship, laughter and a whole lot of feathers! While out in California in early November, I had the opportunity to be among the first to screen the movie. Not to mention, interview the directors! I then had the chance to screen it again locally just recently.  Point blank, I absolutely LOVED the movie. Without going into too much detail (you can read my spoiler-free review HERE), the movie is about a super spy, Lance Sterling (played by Will Smith), who finds himself in need of help from a super science geek (played by Tom Holland) whose idea of saving the world looks a little different than Sterling’s.
The official mobile game is based on the animated spy comedy adventure from 20th Century Fox and Blue Sky Studios and will launch alongside the film on December 25th. In the game, players can take control of either the world’s best spy Lance Sterling, Secret Agent Marcy Kappel from Internal Affairs, or Walter Beckett, super scientist ~ all three of whom are major characters in the film.  It’s an endless running game filled with opportunities to unlock futuristic gadgets, amazing abilities or specially equipped spy vehicles in a quest to become the world’s best super spy / special agent.
We’re talking big box office action, characters, global locations and cinematic action moments inspired by the film itself. The game even features voice clips from the film’s all-star cast, including Will Smith, Tom Holland and Rashida Jones (who plays Marcy Kappel).
My personal experience with the game
Okay, so I’ve confessed in previous posts that I’m not a gamer by any means. I actually don’t play games very often on my phone. However, since I really enjoyed the movie and the few minutes I had the chance to play it in California, I offered no hesitation when given the chance to check out the game a little early and for longer than originally provided.
By my own admission, I didn’t do so well in California. I was quite inexperienced at the “run game” and had to learn how to look ahead of my character. Since putting in some more playtime here at home, I’ve found myself actually having difficulty putting the game down! I enjoy the vibrant colors, the definition of the graphics and the ego-boosting milestones. I love how the characters in the game fit their roles in the movie, too.
However, I do have to admit that I found moving my character to the right or left x2 is a little tedious at times. I am also still learning the meaning behind certain aspects of the game, how certain gadgets are operated or found, and how to focus on the run. The game does have a tendency to appear a little “busy,” if you will, so it does take some focus to know where you are, what comes next and where you need to run.
In my time with the game, I’ve picked up several spy briefcases, earned the help of several pigeons, picked up a spy vehicle and reached level 15. Not too bad for someone who doesn’t play mobile games often. Right?
I am actually enjoying the play. Even after a week or so with it, I still pick it up whenever I’m in a doctor’s office, on the couch or when I need to fill a few minute void I may have.
But what do my teen boys think….
The Boys experience with the game
I asked the two younger boys (ages 16 and 13) to give Spies in Disguise: Agents on the Run a try, as well. My hope was to watch over their shoulder as they maneuvered their character around each scene. I mean, let’s be honest. They are certainly more knowledgeable on how these games work and what to expect. They’ve played similar style games in the past and at least have an idea of how to jump, slide and move with ease.
Together, we’ve run down city sidewalks and through underground subway tunnels, as well as earned a spy vehicle for one of our characters that takes us through high ways and tunnels.
The 16 year old’s thoughts:
While both boys have a propensity for video games, the 16 year old can maneuver the field well.  He found the game easy to pick up and to have solid graphics. He also felt game play was pretty good.
However, he also found it a little frenetic. There was just a lot of stuff happening all at once. While the game starts off slowly, it picks up very quickly..
The 13 year old’s thoughts:
This is my “tech kid”.  He is all about opening the suitcases, unlocking the gadgets and uncovering everything secret and hidden. He found graphics to be good and the movements fairly sufficient. However, movement-wise, he found the same issues we did. When our character was in the spy vehicle, it was just a little too difficult to maneuver the car over two lanes when going that fast. Hit a car, slow the action down. However, this part of the game is timed, so you lose opportunities to gain anything if this happens.
His final response was that it was a fun play.  He felt there is enough to keep the attention of young and old alike.
Final Thoughts:
This non-gamer enjoyed the mobile app and the more experienced teens found the action enjoyable, as well. It looks like we may very well have a winner! Â
Now, I will say this. It definitely suits the gamer who has the ability to think fast, act fast and know what is coming. It requires fingers that move quickly and eyes that can see ahead of the game. The younger audience may not find this one very entertaining, or at least manageable. However, I think it’s geared more towards the tweens and up.
