It’s finally here! Yes – it is that time of the year when we can pull out our autumn decorations, light up the pumpkin scented candles and drink pumpkin spice flavored coffee beverages until our faces turn orange ~ all without incurring heavy judgement! Sure, realistically, there are those among us who have had their fall decor hanging since September 1st (not me). I won’t judge, but today we can make no mistake in saying, “Welcome to Fall!” So, that has me thinking. With October approaching so quickly, what kind of October traditions does your family have?

Of course, I personally have to take into consideration that I no longer live in a climate that even remotely resembles autumn weather. This is our second full autumn season down south and out of New England, so I’m a little…misty-eyed, to say the least. I managed last year, though, so I can do it again. I love where we are and there are plenty of opportunities to at least fake it…I mean, enjoy fall…down here.
October Traditions
Something I do love about this time of year, though, is that October traditions seem to take on more life. People seem to have certain routines or rituals to welcome in the changing of the seasons. No, I’m not talking about seasonal allergies or the flu ~ those are October traditions we would all rather avoid. I’m talking more about the things we do that celebrate the fact that we have entered a a new season.
For me, I have a list of about ten things I do when it is officially deemed autumn. My boys sigh every time I bring them up and it’s like pulling teeth sometimes to get them to participate. Nonetheless, I’m going to do them anyway to the best of my ability.
Bring out the decor!
We have three hunter green colored sturdy containers where we store our autumn decor. These containers have been dragged all over the country with us – having moved at least five to eight times! Inside, we keep both seasonal and holiday items, some of which will stay in there for another month or so (Thanksgiving items). However, the pumpkins, the gold and burgundy colored leaves, the Mickey shaped jack-o-lantern ~ oh, yeah…they all come out on display. My consistent challenge is that, since we have moved so much, I always have to find a new place to display these thing. New house – new location.

Light up that Spiced Pumpkin Candle!
I confess ~ I am a Yankee Candle snob!!!! Yes, I am! (Yankee Candle…you heard me! !). I have a scent for every season and believe their quality is top notch! When we lived in New England, we were very close to one of the flagship stores and I spent a great deal of time up there. It was literally my second favorite happy place on earth.

So, in and around October 1st, I proudly bring out the Spiced Pumpkin Yankee Candle and burn from dawn to bedtime. No other scent works for me. This one just screams autumn! (Okay, I confess – I brought it out on September 23rd this year…I couldn’t wait!)
BUY THAT FIRST (CLEARS THROAT) PUMPKIN SPICE BEVERAGE AT STARBUCKS!
Who am I kidding? I’ll do anything pumpkin spice this time of year and, yes, I admit it. I have already had a Pumpkin Spiced flavored drink from Starbucks. But on October 1st, I get one just to say I did and take that first sip with a smile! Ahhh – the flavors of autumn..

Schedule pumpkin picking
This has been a tradition since our oldest was knee high to a grasshopper! I love those pumpkin patch pictures and get all teary-eyed every time I look at their adorable fat cheeks hugging those gourds. However, here in Florida, I’m not sure there is a place to actually PICK pumpkins. I did find a fun place to go, though, where we can sip on cider, take a ride through the fields and purchase a pumpkin to bring home. I’m looking forward to visiting Southern Hill Farms again. Of course, with the family dynamics changing (one off at college and two high schoolers who are constantly busy), I’m always a little concerned that this event may not make it on the calendar (sniff, sniff).

Roast pumpkin seeds
This, however, WILL make it on the calendar because the boys absolutely love roasting pumpkin seeds and munching on them like they were candy. It has actually become quite the tradition on Halloween proper. We have tried it two ways, a batch with garlic salt and a batch with a taco seasoning / chili blend. I may try to find a few other options this year to try – mix it up a little. BUT ~ we have to get pumpkins first!! If not from a patch, we may have to just buy them at our local Publix.
Look through my cookbook for fall recipes
My husband has a favorite fall recipe that my boys unfortunately do not like ~ pumpkin sloppy joes! I’ll make it once during October for him, but I do love spending time gleaning through my “hundreds” of Taste of Home cookbooks (yup – I’m a Taste of Home snob, too) Whether it’s chili, various soup recipes, toasted sandwiches or dishes that include nutmeg, ginger, cinnamon or all spice, I’m going to try to find a way to incorporate it into our autumn meal plan.

Plan out Halloween Night activities
This one is a little tricky because, as many of you know, our youngest son has severe food allergies. Trick or Treating has never been high on our priority list and the older two were never really huge fans. We did it a little when they were young and we were familiar with our neighbors, but begging for candy was never something my children enjoyed doing. Who am I to complain, right?
Of course, living near Walt Disney World, we did have the chance to experience Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween party last year for the very first time. What an amazing event!!! Our youngest son had the opportunity to go “trick-or-treating” and only brought home goodies that were safe for him! This is a food allergy family’s dream come true!
When it comes to Halloween night, however, we’ve always just found something to do as a family in the home that night. There is usually some kind of Halloween movie playing in the background (not the kind that will make you afraid to open the door, though), while we carve our pumpkins and then find ourselves a family game to play. We love Yahtzee and Train Dominoes! We munch on pumpkin seeds and popcorn, as well as some candy that we have purchased and just wanted to keep.
Hand out to the neighborhood kids
So – this is a big question we get every year. Do we give out candy to trick-or-treaters? Yes, we do. We usually have two bowls of candy ready to give out. There is a bowl that is full of the standards and then a bowl with candy that is safe for those who have food allergies (our youngest handles this bowl). Enjoy Life, Free2b, Surf Sweet and even Smarties are okay for most food allergies.
Why do we not hand out non-food related items? We just never got into it. I think it’s a great idea…but the boys wanted to do candy, our son didn’t feel slighted and I love that they want to be incorporated into handing things out. Giving versus taking – always a good thing.
I am a fool when it comes to watching shows that are seasonally or holiday related. Once October rolls around, I am all about making sure we catch a few of our favorites throughout the month.
- Hocus Pocus
- Nightmare Before Christmas
- Hotel Transylvania
- The Addams Family
- Beetlejuice (maybe not the youngest, though)
- Disney•Pixar’s Toy Story of Terror
- It’s The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown (it’s tradition!!!!)
How many of these are on your “must-watch” list? Each year, we keep adding to the repertoire and this year will be no different. We saw the film House with a Clock in Its Walls last year. If you get the chance, I highly recommend seeing this!! Jack Black was spectacular and I loved him paired up with Cate Blanchett. For sure, this will become a movie we watch every October from this point forward.
Take photos of autumn
There were days way back when that Hubby and I would just hop in the car and drive along to gaze upon the absolutely stunning landscape this time of the year boasts throughout much of the country. The gold, auburn, burgundy, orange and brown hues are mesmerizing and captivating to us. It was one of my favorite October traditions, as it injected a sense of comfort that almost prepares us for the upcoming holidays and hibernation.

That’s probably what I miss the most about not being up north this year. The colors. New England was one of our favorite places to live and be when it came to watching the leaves changing colors. A drive, a stroll ~ it didn’t matter….they were beautiful to watch and fabulous for photographs. I miss that ~ but I guess that simply means we will have to plan our vacations around this time of year so that we can find a way to see them and fill that void. Look at that – perhaps a new October tradition to add later in life (wink, wink).

Do you have any October traditions? Are there things you find yourself doing on a regular basis when this time of year rolls around? Are you a pumpkin fan? Do you light seasonally scented candles? Do you have a favorite location you enjoy going that just screams “oh, my gosh ~ It’s autumn!”?
I’d love to hear what traditions you might have. Feel free to share your autumn traditions below.

This post gave me ALL the Fall feels!!! How exciting to watch leaves turn colors, change to our comfy wardrobes and be able to do holiday activities together!!!
Thanks, Lily!!! As the boys get older, the time together is becoming less and less, but I hope to keep and incorporate as many of these traditions as possible for as long I can! Thanks for the read!!
I bet you miss NE this time of year! I have been in Florida since 1980. After you have been here a few years and have grieved cooler weather and beautiful colors, you will get a sense there is a change in the atmosphere. Much more subtle but still a change. Low humidity, higher winds and even a fresher smell. I promise! I sensed it yesterday!
LOL – you’re right. I do miss NE quite a bit right now….but I’m sure I won’t in about three months. I am, however, looking forward to the subtle changes you mentioned. I’m sure within a year or two this will “feel” like autumn to me and Christmas in shorts will become commonplace. LOL. Thanks for the read, Tricia!
Love all of these! My teen daughter and I enjoyed a pumpkin spice latte the first day they were available – it tasted like Fall!
I love that you and your daughter did it together! Talk about fall family memories. That’s awesome.
I love all these fall traditions. We have many of the same at our house.
What a great way to start the season, right?? I hope you have a wonderful autumn full of amazing memories!
YES! We do many of these traditions, too. Pumpkin spice candles are my favorite scent and it’s the best day when I can light a new one for the first time in the season!
There is just something magical about lighting it for the first time of the season. Isn’t there?
Wonderful post! Love all things Fall and this just gives me warm fuzzy feelings 🙂
I love bringing in autumn with decorations, pumpkin spice, and firewood! Favorite time of the year.
Oh, man! I forgot about the smell of a good wood fire in a fireplace! Thanks for the reminder!! I love this time of year, too!!
I always have the best of intentions but never seem to do much for fall decorating, especially now that I don’t have kids at home. I did buy some “Churro” scented diffuser oil from Magic Candle Company though! LOL
Churro scented? That would make me hungry!! LOL!!! I bet that smells delicious!
These are great ideas! I love to welcome it by decorating my porch.
Great post! I love fall and all the traditions that go with it. That Starbucks is definitely calling my name, though! 🙂
What a great list! I have still been finishing my summer candles, I will have to get out my fall candles to change the mood to fall!
I know that feeling!! You never want to put a candle away with any of it left. LOL! I’ve been there. I was burning our apple scented candle until the late hours on Sept 30. I’ll be like that through Thanksgiving now with the new one. Happy fall, Jennifer! I hope your autumn is wonderful!
I would probably do pumpkin spice all year round, so that’s a definite! Love your traditions…the kids may roll their eyes now, but when they are grown they will cherish the memories!
Oh, I hope so!!!! I’m going to keep doing them because they make me smile, too, but I do hope they remember these and even find a few to carry on with their own families. (but I’m not rushing the growing up part at all…lol)
That candle is amazing! We go pumpkin picking at our favorite farm and stock up on their homemade cinnamon donuts.
Oh, cinnamon doughnuts!!!! Yum!!!! I forgot about those. Now I’m hungry. LOL!!
The leaves are starting to change color here, and I’m loving it! Hoping to bring my daughter to a harvest festival tomorrow…as long as it’s not too cold and rainy!
Aww! I’m jealous!! But I do hope you enjoy everything about it!! Enjoy the harvest festival and breathe in a little autumn air for me!!
I live in the desert, so no traditional fall weather for me either. Fall is my favorite season, so I force it with candles, decor, and pumpkin spice everything. I think you and Yankee Candle is a perfect collaboration. 😀
LOL – I think so, too! I wish we could connect! As for living in the desert ~ we did that for a period of time. We were in AZ for a few years. I missed the colors sooo much, but grew to appreciate a few of the desert qualities. I love how you said you “force it” ~ lol!! Enjoy the changing of seasons, Christa!
These are great fall traditions!
Thanks, Dee!!!
I’m glad that you listed Halloween movies. I still need to see Hocus Pocus!
LOL ~ You should see my list of Christmas movies that have to be watched from the day after Thanksgiving through Christmas, but I’ll share that next month. 😉👣 As for Hocus Pocus ~ it’s definitely a must-see at least once. It’s certainly not award-winning material, but just something that “screams” volumes to the season. 🎃🧡
Such a great roundup of fall traditions! I LOVE fall decor and Halloween-themed movies! Thanks for sharing!
My pleasure! Thanks for the read. I hope you have a fabulous season, Kathryn!
Our fall decorations are still packed in the attic and I need to take them out ASAP. I love the fall and the changing of the leaves and would like to celebrate that with outside décor.
Here’s hoping you find a moment to bring those decorations out!! Such a fun season!! 🍁🍂
You have stirred up all my fall senses with this post and now I’m ready for all things fall. I love how you have a tradition for the season. I’ve never heard of pumkin sloppy joe’s before. Sounds interesting! Enjoy your fall season 🙂
– Heidi Hourani
Pumpkin sloppy joes have a delicious sweet flavor to them and are a perfect fall meal! Of course, Hubby likes it more than the boys do, so we only do it once when fall rolls around. LOL! I hope you enjoy your autumn, Heidi!!
This past weekend said FALL!!! The weather is changing, leaves are falling, and it’s time to start the season. I didn’t get a chance to decorate the house, but that is my plan this weekend PLUS to make some pumpkin bread. Ohhh I can’t wait. Thanks for sharing your fall agenda!!!
Wooow! I love it! You are so on top of it, and your post gave me some great ideas about fall movies! Fantastic list! 👍🏻😊
Thanks, Vessy!!! I’m just glad to hear it inspired you! Here’s hoping you have a fabulous autumn season.
Fall movies – never thought of that!
