Calling all Ice Age fans ~ especially those who enjoy Scrat, the unlucky and dim-witted saber-toothed squirrel! Have you had the chance to check out Ice Age: Scrat’s Nutty Adventure yet? We recently took a stab at the game ourselves and found ourselves with ~ hmm ~ mixed feelings. Â

Ice Age: Scrat’s Nutty Adventure Game
Ice Age: Scrat’s Nutty Adventure is a recently released 3D platforming adventure video game currently available on PC, Playstation, XBox and Nintendo Switch. It stars the movie’s over-anxious prehistoric squirrel in a quest to find four legendary crystal nuts. The player directs Scrat across various landscapes – including icy tundras, forests and volcanic mountain areas – climbing, digging, sneaking and sliding, as well as engaging in mild combat along way. Throughout the four stages of the game, Scrat finds himself coming across familiar characters and up against beetles, rats, wolves, raptors and piranhas. In the midst of all that, he also finds a host of hidden treasures and uncovers abilities he can use during these multiple encounters.Â
The Boys Take On Ice Age: Scrat’s Nutty Adventure
We were given the opportunity to explore the game in exchange for our honest review. The boys have been fans of Ice Age movies through the years and have enjoyed the antics and humor. They were definitely curious to see what the game entailed. Prior to this, they had not played any other Ice Age video game and, to be honest, we weren’t sure if that would end up being a requirement for this one (such as it would be with other games we’ve reviewed).Â
Fortunately, it wasn’t. The boys and I actually spent a few hours together, taking turns at directing Scrat around the game. Yes, you read that correctly. I gave it a try, too. Sadly, the game is designed for one player and one player only. As I’ve noted in times past, the boys enjoy playing games together and this was something that made the game slightly unattractive to them. However, we did take the time to sit down and observe each other as we each took a turn at the XBox controller. Â
Personal thoughts:
The boys enjoyed this game more than others we’ve explored. They were happy to have the universal controls back in place (recent games have proven to change the jobs each button would do) and they found it easy to learn what they were able to do with Scrat via the controller. They felt the game was fairly easy to maneuver and not difficult in the least to understand. Â
However, being teenagers, they did quickly find themselves bored after a short time. It does seem that this game is designed to attract a younger audience with its very simplistic goals and theme. There isn’t much in the way of intricacy or involvement other than trying to gather crystal nuts, uncover hidden treasures and defeat enemies with the limited martial arts Scrat knows.Â
All three of us also found the game to be quite choppy, oftentimes making ME dizzy while playing (see warning below). However, please note – I’m 40-something and don’t play a lot of video games for a reason.Â
The levels were quite similar to each other and didn’t offer much in the way of imaginative design. The 3D aspects of the game did seem a little back-dated, as if they had not employed the most current technology to create the game. Â
Needless to say…
At the time, we actually did enjoy the lack of complexity and exploration the game offered. The boys had fun watching me maneuver around the lands, laughing every time I fell into the water or tried to jump. I loved watching them uncover new abilities with each level they were able to complete.
The feature we loved the most?
There are tons of opportunities to automatically save your progress in the game. If Scrat falls into the water or is defeated by an enemy, he is immediately brought back to the last “save spot” he passed. They are obvious, they are defined. They are many.
OK – SO, HERE’S MY FORMAL WARNING!
I mentioned this briefly above, but want to make a little stronger mention of it here. I don’t play video games too often. However, I gave this one a try because it looked cute and fun. I also thought it would be good to give myself the opportunity to share some of my own thoughts as a mom.
While I enjoyed the exploration of the game, I did get motion sick while playing it on the XBox. The graphics are very “choppy” and I found myself developing a headache within about ten to fifteen minutes. I kept playing and, in time, I actually found myself not feeling well at all. It’s too bad because I was enjoying myself.  Though the boys and I felt the game had no true purpose and was very turbulent (if you will), it was kind of fun to send Scrat on this crazy adventure.

Final Thoughts on Ice Age: Scrat’s Nutty Adventure Game
The game wasn’t built to attract teenagers, true gamers or adults like me. It is, however, geared towards a younger audience of players, particularly those with a familiarity of the movie. Its simplistic goals and easy maneuverability lend themselves to entertaining that age group and has the potential to keep them engaged for a period of time. It has no blood, no gore and no inappropriate content, though it does allow Scrat to “kick” his enemies to defeat them. While I don’t believe it will would be hours of game time (I also don’t believe kids should be spending hours in front of a video game), all in all, it is a clean, easy to play game that may very well be a great choice for younger players to enjoy from time to time.  Â
It’s not a bad game It’s not an amazing game. It is, however, a fun game to play for a little while.
