I’m no different than the rest of you ~ I confess to be among the throngs of people who have been waiting for Captain Marvel to arrive in theaters. Ever since Fury activated the pager at the end of Avengers: Infinity War (sniff, sniff), we have all been curious how this was going to play out and into the next installment. Well, I was invited to an early screening of the movie prior to its release in theaters and on the same day it premiered. I’m telling you ~ Captain Marvel answers a LOT of questions we all have.

Captain Marvel
Of course, I’m not about to SHARE the answers to those questions. I want you to enjoy the element of surprise and have the same opportunity I had to have your eyes pop and jaws drop. However, I did feel like the movie clearly communicated a few key points and messages that we can all take home. I thought it would be fun to pen those ~ without giving away the important parts, of course.
First, About The Movie
In Captain Marvel, we seem to finally have a missing piece of the Marvel Cinematic Universe puzzle revealed ~ a piece from the distant past that appears will fit nicely into the current scenario somehow. Carol Danvers is a highly skilled intergalactic “warrior hero” in the middle of a battle between two alien races ~ a battle that finds its way to earth. While one side is in search of something, the other is desperately trying to reach it first in order to prevent it from falling into the other’s hands. In the process, a young woman finds herself desperately trying to find her identity and role, as well as the best employment of her specialized skill set in an effort to end a war.
Personal thoughts….
Oh, I confess that I wasn’t sure how to take Brie Larson being cast as one of the most powerful heroes within the MCU. However, after watching her on the screen, she actually delivered a superb blend of humor and strength into a character I knew very little about until recently. Larson gave me a reason to connect with this hero and a desire to see her as a part of the elite team.
It has to be said ~ the digital effects used on Samuel L. Jackson (Fury) and Clark Gregg’s (Agent Coulson) characters to make them appear younger was done exquisitely. I personally found it believable and really enjoyed being able to see them in what would have been the earlier stages of their S.H.I.E.L.D. careers.
Now, if I were to be completely honest, I would have thought Coulson to have had a little more hair on top….but maybe they made him with a “genetic” predisposition. Who knows? (I’m curious to hear what you think when you see him)
Captain Marvel: My Takeaways
Now, while I don’t want to give away any spoilers, I do love sharing how a movie impacted me. I absolutely love coming away from a film having either learned something or feeling better about myself in some way. This movie did both ~ as I learned more about the mosaic that is the MCU and walked away feeling a little more confident in my own “super human strengths.” (not really, but we all have something we are extra good at doing).

Be the best version of yourself
Now, before I dive into explaining this one further, I have to say this…”but not the best version of what someone else thinks you should be.”
I know the latter part of this all too well. I spent years trying to be the best version of what someone else wanted for me. All that caused was an increased amount of stress, elevated anxiety and significant disappointment. That person was never satisfied with my accomplishments or proud of me for achieving my own personal goals.
It took years to get over that mental captivity, but I am finally working towards being the best version of myself. I am sharpening my skills and talents, educating myself on opportunities and taking leaps of faith that my heart feels compelled to take. I have a good support system in place, stocked with people who want to see me succeed at my dreams.
The moral? Don’t let anyone hinder you from discovering who you truly are and what you are truly meant to be doing. Find YOUR passion. Nurture YOUR talents. Pursue YOUR dreams. Then work hard to be the best version of YOU.
You have nothing to prove to anyone.
This goes almost hand in hand with the above piece of advice. I’ve spent too much time in the past trying to prove myself worthy or capable of someone’s attention or a particular role. I’ve worked harder than needed in order to gain respect from people who have pretty much watched me toil and then left me in a weak state, exhausted from having pushed myself too hard ~ for them.
I had to learn that I have nothing to prove to anyone, except myself, and it wasn’t a matter of proving I was worthy of anything to myself. It was more of proving that I had it in me to nurture my own dreams. I had the strength to learn what I needed to learn in order to make myself become the best version of myself (Hmm – these seem to all intertwine).
It’s a work in process ~ and it always will be…for all of us.
What are your goals? What are your aspirations? How do YOU want to see yourself succeed?
Discover the power that’s within YOU and how to use it to become all you are meant to be.
Again ~ everything seems to be an extension of the other, but each statement is powerful in and of itself. Discovering the power within just allows you to know what skills you want to nurture, sharpen and cultivate. It allows you to find the best parts of you and let them shine. Not only that, but it brings with it a sense of strength, courage and purpose.
Once you have identified that power within, you can find where it fits into the bigger picture.
Movie application?
Over the course of the movie, Carol Danvers discovers the power she possesses (in more ways than one), realizes that she owes no one anything and ultimately becomes the best version of herself to become the hero she was meant to be.
Captain Marvel: Would I recommend?
Yes! It is a perfect blend of humor and action that gives us the answers we have needed to prepare for the next Avengers installment. It will open your eyes to why certain things are the way they are and why this unexplained “marvel” is being introduced a this point in time.
Of course, I’d be foolish not to say it has a lot of action, war and death involved. We do see deceit and manipulation played out, as well. A few profanities are strung throughout the movie, but nothing dramatically shocking is heard. As is typical with Marvel movies, there is no questionable nudity to worry about. Interestingly, there are also no romantic scenes whatsoever in this film, though you wonder if there is something playful going on between “Vers” and Yon-Rogg.
Of course, if you’ve been following the Marvel Cinematic Universe for any length of time, this installment is fairly harmless. It should be perfectly fine for anyone who has watched any portion of the series without issue. Those who are sensitive to battle, loud noises or blood (even if it’s blue) may have some difficulty at times. However, base their viewing this on their previous Marvel exposure. It is not as jaw-dropping as Avengers: Infinity War. It is almost as humorous as Ant-Man. However, it is definitely more interesting than Captain America: The First Avenger (sorry – yes, personal opinion, but had to be said).

My husband has been wanting to see this movie, and to be honest, I’m not a huge fan of super heros. Reading your review has made me more open to watching it, so I’m sure my husband will thank you for that!
Lol! Sounds like there’s a date with hubby in the future 😉. I totally get the super hero thing. The marvel series is the only one I will watch willingly with my house full of testosterone. I think you’ll find Captain Marvel a good one to see. The way they tell the backstory is intriguing. Enjoy your date at the movies!!!
